Description

3 lec/3 lab (4 Cr.) Anatomy and Physiology I is the first part of a two course sequence. It is a study of the structure and function of the human body including cells tissues and organs of the following systems: integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, and special senses. Emphasis is on interrelationships among systems and regulation of physiological functions involved in maintaining homeostasis. The lab provides a hands-on learning experience for exploration of human system components and basic physiology. Systems to be studied include integumentary skeletal, muscular, nervous and special senses.

Objectives

Upon completion of the core curriculum, students are expected to demonstrate competence in all of the core objectives listed in the college catalog. The overall content of this course is designed to enhance skills in each of the following core objectives.

Assignments and Activities

Lecture Exams - all lecture exams will be administered online using Canvas and Lockdown Browser and Test Monitor.   Each lecture exam will consist of multiple-choice questions and short answer/essay questions with occasional use of true/false and matching. Exams will cover the material presented in lectures and/or assigned textbook/case study readings.  Lecture Exams will OPEN at 1159pm on the scheduled date and will CLOSE at 1159 pm 2 days later.  This will allow students a 48 hr window of availability to complete the exam.  

Lab practical Exams - lab exams will be administered online using Canvas and Lockdown Browser and Test Monitor.  Exams will cover the material that is covered in the lab manual, online lab activities and procedures in Pearson Mastering.  Practical questions will consist of fill in the blank and there is NO word bank.  Correct spelling is required in order to receive credit for the question.  Any misspellings will result in zero (0) points for the question.  Lab Practicals will OPEN at 1159pm on the scheduled date and will CLOSE at 1159 pm 2 days later.  This will allow students a 48 hr window of availability to complete the exam.  

Lecture Quizzes/Lab Quizzes -will be administered in masteringaandp.com.  Lecture quizzes will OPEN 7 days before the scheduled lecture exam and will CLOSE the day of the lecture exam (by the start of class).  Lab quizzes will consist of fill in the blank, short answer questions from lab material. There is NO word bank. Correct spelling is required in order to receive credit for the question.  Any misspellings will result in zero (0) points for the question.  Students are expected to use pencil on all lab assessments.  Lab quizzes OPEN at 1159pm on the scheduled date and will CLOSE at 1159 pm 2 days later.  This will allow students a 48 hr window of availability to complete the quiz  

Online Lab Activities - online lab activities in Mastering will be used to aid in students understanding of the course material.  These assignments will coincide with the lab exercises in the Pearson lab manual.

In addition to the required online assignments, Mastering A and P has many study aids available to help with your understanding of the material and course success.  If you do not have access to a computer at home there are computers available for student use in the library.

Final Exam - the final exam will be administered online using Canvas and Lockdown Browser and Test Monitor and will be comprehensive.  The exam will consist of multiple choice questions to evaluate student learning outcomes. The Final Exam will OPEN at 12 am on the scheduled final exam date and will CLOSE at 1159 pm on the same day, in accordance with the Navarro College Final Exam schedule. Students are expected to complete the Final exam during the final exam day.  

There is NO MAKE-UP for any assessments (exams, quizzes, practicals). 

MASTERING A and P ONLINE ASSIGNMENTS - The online component of BIOL 2401 has been added to Canvas.  To access Mastering for your required assignments and to study, simply do the following:

  1. Click on MyLab and Mastering link (located in the left-hand menu of Canvas).
  2. Follow the instructions to enter your access code and establish your contact information through Pearson.

Once complete, you will always access your Pearson assignments through the Mastering menu in Canvas.  

There are 4 lecture exam quizzes that will be due at the start of class on the day of the lecture exam.  These assignments will be available to you 7 days before the due date.  Once the assignment has closed it will not be reopened for any reason.

Grading Criteria

The grade criteria will conform to the established policy of Navarro College as stated in the College catalog: A=90-100%; B=80-89%; C=70-79%; D=60-69%; F=59% or below.  The final course grade is based on the total number of points earned at the end of the semester. The instructor will not round up the total points for grade determination.  Final letter grade is determined by the total points earned out of the total points possible for the course.  The percentage given is so that students may gauge their performance as the semester progresses.  Students who do not earn the minimum number of points for each grade level (A, B, C, etc.) will obtain the grade to which their total points corresponds.  DO NOT ASK FOR EXTRA POINTS to compensate for ‘almost there’ scenario.  Point totals will be taken at face value and letter grade will be assigned as follows.  It is the students responsibility to understand the grading system.

Method of Instruction: Lecture accompanied by PowerPoint, whiteboard/chalkboard diagrams, and various class activities. Labs using microscopes, prepared slides, models, specimens to dissect, and other materials as needed.

Instructional Methodologies

Face to Face  Hybrid Online

Face to face courses are taught in a traditional classroom format. 

Courses classified as “Hybrid” in the course schedule (identified with the letter ‘H’ in the course section designation) will use a combination of face-to-face classroom and online instructional methods. A minimum of 50 percent of the course must be taught online to be classified as a hybrid course.

Students must have regular access to a computer and a reliable internet connection, either on campus or in a personal setting, to complete all assignments.

In addition to traditional lecture, Navarro College uses the Canvas Learning Management System to provide course materials and activities assigned by the instructor. Here is a video overview of Canvas:

Please note some courses will also use materials provided by the publisher and require the student to have an access code in order to complete assignments, activities, and exams. Please see the Materials section of this syllabus to determine if an access code will be necessary for this course.

Final Exams

Students are required to take final exams during the posted final exam week and should not make travel reservations or other plans which would require them to request a rescheduled final.  Requests to take final exams early, or at a time other than indicated on the final exam schedule, must be approved by the appropriate Executive Dean and are granted only in exceptional circumstances. Personal or family travel plans are not deemed as exceptional circumstances.

Confidentiality and Mandatory Reporting

Students may choose to share personal information or experiences, as appropriate, in written assignments, class discussions, presentations, and conferences with instructors. While instructors and other college employees will strive to keep personal student information private, they are required to report information about sexual misconduct, childhood abuse, and criminal activity to the proper authorities. College-level courses may include controversial, sensitive, and/or adult material. Students are expected to have the readiness for college-level rigor and content.

Dr. Jones’ Email Policy

  • If students email the professor from a third party vendor (yahoo, Gmail, etc), she will not respond.
  • When sending email to Dr. Jones, follow these guidelines:
    • Start with a Greeting- Hello, Good Morning, Dear etc.
    • BE PROFESSIONAL AND RESPECTFUL
    • Instructors teach multiple classes and multiple disciplines, so your thorough introduction is greatly appreciated.
  • Always include your Name, Course and Section number
  • Use complete sentences and proper punctuation in correspondence.
  • Never use foul, vulgar, inappropriate, discriminatory, rude, or otherwise unprofessional language.
  • Remember, the relationship between student and professor is a PROFESSIONAL relationship NOT a friendship, therefore be sure to not include Dr. Jones in your forwarded emails to friends, classmates, chat rooms, or personal updates.
  • Jones will respond to student emails Monday – Friday 10 am – 6 pm only. Emails arriving after hours on weekdays or over the weekend will be answered the next following business day.
  • Jones will attempt to respond to student emails as soon as possible within a 24 hour period barring system downtime, accident, sickness, or any other causes beyond her control.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to do their own work at all times. Cheating is a serious offense with serious consequences which may include any of the following:  a grade of zero, course failure, or removal from a program.

In this online environment, a certain level of trust was bestowed upon each student to conduct oneself in an honorable and professional manner. Trust and honesty are the foundation of academia! Cheating in an academic setting is a cardinal sin. Keep in mind that there will be severe consequences if this cardinal sin is committed. In case the temptation arises, DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!

Policy for Online Exam Environment – Zero Tolerance Policy

Navarro College uses Respondus LockDown Browser and video recording of online examination. The following rules are strictly enforced to maintain the academic integrity. Failure to comply will result in a zero grade for the assignment in which the offense was committed. In addition to these rules, the professor reserves his right to enforce the policy based on students’ questionable behavior before and during the exam.

  1. Getting ready for the exam:
    1. Room Scan requirements – Scan the area and the room slowly for clear visibility.
      1. Students will scan the immediate area where the computer is used for testing purpose.
      2. Students will scan the entire surrounding area where testing is taken place.
      3. If this scan does not show clearly the testing area, the student will be given zero for the exam.
    2. Place all electronic devices, including but not limited to cell phones, tablets, smart watches, another computer away from the testing area. This can be documented during the room scan for evidentiary purpose.
    3. Keep the microphone and video turn on until finishing the exam.
  2. During the exam:
    1. Student is the only person allowed in the exam area. Students are responsible to inform parents, siblings, friends, and anyone else of their exam taking status to stay away from the exam area. If anyone is visible or someone is talking to the student, zero will be given for the exam.
    2. Students are strongly advised to keep their eyes straight forward to the computer screen where the exam is displayed. A slight movement of the eyes is allowed for keyboard and mouse usage. However, continuous deflecting one’s eyes to any direction away from the screen is called for academic integrity violation and zero will be given for the exam.
    3. Respondus uses facial recognition to determine students’ behaviors while taking exam. The following rules are specifically applied when it comes to Respondus documentation of students’ facial features.
      1. The student’s face must be completely and clearly visible in the video for the entire time while taking exam. The face is defined as the frontal area of the human head to include the forehead, eyes, nose, mouth, and chin.
      2. Do not cover the face or impede facial features visualization by sunglasses, clothing articles (hoodies, cap, hat, etc.). Face covering as required for health protocol by the State of Texas is the only exception to this rule.
      3. Respondus will alert students when facial detection is compromised. Students are responsible to correct their behaviors immediately to show their faces again. If this alert is turned off by students, it is a clear violation of academic integrity and zero will be given for the exam.
    4. Do not read the questions and answers out loud while taking the exam. This is not allowed in person face-to-face setting; thus, is not allowed in the online environment. Violation will result in zero be given for the exam.
    5. Students can use one blank piece of paper as scrap paper. If this is needed, students must show the paper slowly and clearly at the beginning of the exam. Students will speak clearly to declare their intention of using the scrap paper for documentation. Failure to do so will result in zero be given for the exam.
    6. Once again, students are strongly advised to keep their eyes forward to the computer screen while taking the exam and maintain their behaviors as that of taking an exam in person in a face-to-face setting. Whatever activities are not allowed in the face-to-face setting for the exam are not allowed in the online environment as well. Zero will be given for the exam for violations.

 

Failure to comply to any of the above rules will result in academic integrity violation and zero will be given for the exam. This is a Zero Tolerance Policy.

 

 

Student Conduct

All students enrolled in classes at Navarro College shall follow the tenets of common decency and acceptable behavior conducive to a positive learning environment. Behavior deemed by the instructor to be disruptive may result in the student being dropped from the course.

Subject to Change

The Course Syllabus and/or the Course Calendar may be changed as the term progresses at the discretion of the department and/or instructor.

Late/Make-Up Work

There is no late/makeup work for this course.  All assessments will be open for a set period of time and students are expected to complete assignments on time as listed in the class schedule.  Failure to complete an assignment by the due date will result in a zero (0) grade and it cannot be made up.

  • Students are required to take all exams as scheduled. No exam will be given earlier or later than the scheduled date.
  • There is NO MAKE-UP for Lecture Exam or Lab Practical Exam.
  • To maintain integrity of the exam and fairness to unexpected or emergency event, the following policy is used for ONE missed Lecture Exam or Lab Practical Exam only.
    • The missed Lecture Exam or Lab Practical Exam will be given a zero.
    • At the end of the semester, the professor will take the average of all the exams that student had taken and use that to replace the zero for calculating the Total Points Earned for determination of the Letter Grade.
    • Example
      • There are six major exams (lecture and lab) for the course.
      • Student A missed Lecture Exam 2 – zero is recorded in the grade book.
      • Student A took the other five exams with results as followed
        • Lecture Exam 1 – 80 points
        • Lecture Exam 3 – 90 points
        • Lecture Exam 4 – 70 points
        • Lab Practical Exam 1 – 80 points
        • Lab Practical Exam 2 – 70 points
      • The average of all five exams = (80 + 90 + 70 + 80 + 80) / 5 = 78 points, which will be used to replace the zero for missing Lecture Exam 2.

Attendance and Preparation

Face to Face and Hybrid Online

Regular and punctual class attendance is expected at Navarro College as a key element for student success. Excessive absenteeism is defined as two consecutive weeks of instruction in a 16-week semester (or the equivalent in any shorter term) and may result in being dropped from the course.

Students who miss class to participate in a co-curricular activity must have written permission (e-mail accepted) from a coach/director and must make prior arrangements with the instructor to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day. 

Regular (daily or weekly) online work is a key element for student success in an internet-based class.  Students must complete the first assignment by the designated deadline to document participation in the course.  The instructor will drop any student who fails to complete an assignment by the deadline provided in Canvas.

Although the instructor MAY withdraw a student from the class for insufficient participation the RESPONSIBILITY for dropping a class belongs to the student! Insufficient participation is defined as not logging in and completing assignments for the equivalent of two consecutive weeks.  If you are unable to complete the course, you should formally drop it.

  • You may drop this class by completing an online form. It is the student's responsibility to visit with his or her instructor concerning course status before submitting the required paperwork to the Office of Admissions and Records to drop this class.   • Failure to withdraw by the deadline may result in your name remaining on the class roll, resulting in a grade of ‘F’ at the end of the semester. 
  • A student who foresees educational issues related to pregnancy, postpartum recovery, or other physical or mental health matters is strongly encouraged to notify the College as soon as possible.  By doing so, the student and College personnel can collaborate and develop an appropriate plan for the continuation of the student's education.  Pre-planning when possible also may help with particular challenges a student faces while pregnant, when recovering from childbirth, or in response to a physical or mental health concern (e.g., missed classes, make-up work).  The choice to inform the College of any health concern is voluntary. A student is not required to share this information with the College. A student may choose to consult a College counselor or the Office of Disability Services before deciding whether or not to disclose any health-related information.
  • If you are receiving financial aid grants or loans, you must ATTEND AND PARTICIPATE in all classes FROM THE FIRST CLASS DAY.  Do not drop or stop attending any class without consulting the Financial Aid Office. Changes in your enrollment level and/or failing grades may require you to repay financial aid funds.  
  • All students receiving Veterans Administration (VA) benefits must notify the Veteran’s Certifying Official of any enrollment changes as soon as they are made. The Veterans Affairs benefit recipient needs to be aware that the VA may require repayment of all benefits received since the beginning of a semester for any course in which a “W” grade is received
  • According to current Texas law, dropping a course may have serious academic consequences. Under most circumstances, a maximum of 6 courses may be dropped throughout the entire undergraduate degree program.
